Red Bull Soweto Sessions Results

This is the press release sent out by Red Bull

International & Local BMX riders “jam” in Soweto!

Johannesburg, 24 May 2009

Sebastian Keep from the UK took top honors at the Red Bull Soweto Sessions BMX contest on Sunday the 24th May 2009. 17 Top riders from around the country came down to the Orlando Power Station in Soweto to battle it out on a tailor-made park constructed by the riders themselves.

The 75m long BMX course combined elements of dirt, street and natural obstacles designed to push the riders to their limits. The day was filled with back flips, whips, bar spins and impressive landings.

The invited Pro riders enjoyed an Open Jam session on Saturday, before the event along with local amateur riders who were encouraged to register and vie for the Wild Card positions for the contest. Over 50 local riders took on the challenge and after a great day spent on the obstacles, the 4 amateur riders were selected.

The crowd streamed in for the 2pm start time of the pro contest which was evenly spread between Durban, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town riders as well as international BMX riders Sebastian Keep and Dan Lacey from the UK. Each rider had two runs, 60 seconds each, to show the judges what they had.

In a closely contested final South African Pro riders Brad & Greg Illingworth, Malcolm Peters, & Colin Loudon showed the internationals what the BMX scene in South Africa had to offer.

Both Dan and Sebastian were impressed by the talent the South African BMX’ers were showing and were in awe of the park built by the local riders, “All the riders in South Africa are really down to earth and welcoming. They are amazing riders and its great to be a part of this. I’m so impressed with the up and coming BMX scene in South Africa.“ said Sebastian.

In the end it was Keep who took the podium in front of a cheering crowd, “This is unbelievable. I’ve never been on a course like this and to win in South Africa is amazing.” Dan Lacey (UK) took 2nd position, his first time on a podium and third place was taken by South African Colin Loudon.

All riders were amazed at the structure and technicality of the temporary built course. The day was not without injury as 3 riders, Stuart Loudon, Jordan Anthony and Wayne Reiche had to withdraw due to various injuries.

The inspiration for the course design came from Capetonian Pro BMX rider Buddy Chellan who had seen the development of BMX’ing in the townships, and inspired by his passion for the sport, decided that an event in Soweto would challenge the local riders to further develop the sport.

The following Pro BMX riders took part in the contest:

Brad Illingworth (JHB)
Greg Illingworth (JHB)
Buddy Chellan (CPT)
Colin Loudon (DBN)
Jordan Anthony (JHB)

All the riders showed up bright and early to register and get in some quality time on the course.

Tons of local Soweto riders showed up for the event, here are a few getting some air outside.

Everyone was eager to sign up and get straight onto the park.

Paul Soderland with a banging table!

Paul again... angry turndown with Colin right behind him.

Brad Illingworth rode smooth and consistent all weekend and was also one of the only guys utilising the taxi set up.

Wayne Reiche escaped death in one of his runs when he accidentally dropped off the 2nd floor in the wrong place!!! Some of the guys, including Wayne were dropping off the roof into the bank before the dirt jump... The 2nd floor is 5m high and the bank was about 2,5m so it was scary enough already. Wayne was chilling up there thinking about his run when they anounced that he can start. He must have been caught up in thought because he accidentaly dropped in by the dirt jump instead of the bank. As he realised what had happened he jumped off the bike and landed in between the launch and the landing somewhere. Wayne got away with only a broken foot... lucky considering what happend... but I think a few people nearly had heart attacks watching it go down.

Tight train through the dirt jump. Greg, Wayne, Malcolm.

Colin Loudon rode absolutely amazingly in finals! Here he is boosting a massive lookback.

Colin, whip off the taxi.

Colin was super stoked to walk away with 3rd place.

Buddy Chellan and Stephen Savage chilling in practice.

Buddy, turndown with all the style in the world.

Same trick, different angle.

Greg Illingworth, nac nac seat grab.

And again... same trick different angle.

Dan Lacey, toothpick on the sub.

Dan, no hander on the dirt.

Dan, no hander off the taxi.

Baz Keep, no hand one foot over the dirt.

Top 3 taking their worhty positions on the podium. Colin Loudon 3rd (right), Dan Lacey 2nd (left), Baz Keep 1st (centre)

Overall the event was a huge success and after speaking to the guys at Red Bull they are very happy with the way it went down. A massive thanks to Red Bull for putting the event on, the guys that helped build, and especially to Buddy Chellan for coming up with the idea and concept.... and making it happen.

Check back for videos soon.

With the construction taking place the guys decided to head down to Montecasino to have a ride in the evening.

Red Bull Soweto Sessions

Here is what Red Bull has to say about the event:

"Red Bull Soweto Sessions is taking place on 23 & 24 May 2009.

This BMX/Street event is being held in the famed township of Soweto at the historical Orlando Power Station.

BMX riders will be invited to join some of the World's best BMX'ers such as South Africa's own Buddy Chellan, to take part in a few jam sessions and finally, the contest.

With the growth of BMX in the townships, we've decided to bring the pros to grass roots level and see how they compare.

These riders will be joined by the rest of South Africa’s pro-BMX riders and together the locals, they will build their dream BMX park.

The park will then become the contest route and this is where we'll separate the real BMX riders from the amateurs!

Park build-up will commence throughout the week for event day. Details below."

EVENT DETAILS

23rd May:
Pro and amateur JAM session
Selection of the wild card riders by the Pro’s for Sundays contest.

24th May:
Short Jam session
Practice Session
Pro Contest

This is going to be HUGE!!!!

The event is the brainchild of Red Bull team rider Buddy Chellan. Buddy wanted to create a BMX contest where dirt, street, park, and gettho ramps were all combined.... and that is exactly what this contest is going to be.

There will be invited riders from all around South Africa and rumours of International riders too. A few wild card riders will be chosen from the Saturday Jam session to compete in the pro comp with the invited riders.

After seeing the venue we could tell this event is going to be absolutely amazing! It's in an abandoned building by the big FNB towers in Soweto. The area is secure and will be safe.

We will have some pics of the venue up soon.

Dirtopia is a sort of dirt festival that started out as a mountain bike event and has since grown into BMX and MTB. For the last few years Riot team rider Wayne Reiche has taken control of building the trails for the event. From what I can tell the boys had as much of a party there as they did ride. Here is a edit that Colin Loudon did of the event and pics from photograher Eric Palmer
